The relationship between resilience and hope with depression in the elderly

Introduction and purpose:Today, depression is one of the most common mental disorders and a  problem in the lives of the elderly. One of the factors that counteracts depression in the elderly is the issue of hope and resilience in them and plays an important role in combating the stresses and threats of life and its adverse effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between resilience and hope with the rate of depression in the elderly. Materials and Methods:The present study was a descriptive and correlational study. The statistical population included all elderly people in Khorramabad in 1398. The sample size was 357 people and the samples were selected using multi-stage cluster random sampling. Data collection tools included Elderly Depression Questionnaires (Brink et al, 1983), Miller's Hope Questionnaire (1988), and Connor and Davidson's Resilience Scale (2003). Data from the implementation of the questionnaires were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and simultaneous regression analysis in 21 version of spss sof ware, to assess the predictive role of predictive resilience and hope in the rate of elderly depression. Findings: The results of this study showed that there is a significant and significant correlation between resilience and depression, and hope and depression. This means that resilience and hope have the potential to predict depression in the elderly, and together they predict 51% of the variance in depression. Conclusion: Considering that resilience and hope in the elderly are subject to change for various reasons, it seems necessary to develop appropriate interventions to increase these two important components in old age.
